Why Ukrainian nuclear power plants are forced to reduce output after Russian attacks

Unfortunately, during massive Russian missile and drone attacks, Ukrainian energy workers are periodically forced to reduce the output of Ukraine’s nuclear power plants.

There are several reasons for these measures:

1. Preventive reduction of generating capacity to meet safety requirements.

A sudden disconnection of high-voltage transmission lines that evacuate power from nuclear units (when they operate at nominal load) can lead to serious consequences, which is why preventive safety measures are applied.

2. Direct consequences of Russian strikes on Ukrenergo substations that transmit nuclear generation.

During the large-scale missile and drone attack on energy facilities on 19 November, the overall nuclear generation capacity in Ukraine’s Unified Energy System was reduced for a certain period.

As of 20 November, the South Ukrainian and Khmelnytskyi NPPs are operating at their nominal capacity. The Rivne Nuclear Power Plant is operating at a slightly reduced output due to the consequences of previous massive attacks on Ukraine’s power system.
