How long can emergency power outages last for consumers in different regions?

In the event of massive attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, as well as targeted strikes on specific energy facilities, the country’s power system may experience significant strain, requiring the introduction of consumption limitation measures. These steps are necessary to enable repair crews to carry out restoration works and to balance electricity generation and consumption levels, since any imbalance could trigger a systemic failure and cause widespread equipment damage.

Under such conditions, emergency power outages may be introduced in regions where energy infrastructure has sustained the most severe damage. These outages are implemented urgently and on the instruction of the system dispatcher. As a rule, they are lifted once the damage has been repaired or after the evening peak consumption period — typically by 10:00 p.m. However, the final decision always depends on the overall load level of the power system.

Before the start of the heating season, consumers often heat their homes using air conditioners or electric heaters. Therefore, it is especially important to follow the recommendations of energy specialists: avoid using high-consumption electrical appliances during morning and evening peak hours. The lower the system load during these periods, the less likely it becomes that restrictions will need to be applied.
