IAEA Mission Assesses Key Ukrainian Substations for Nuclear Safety Risks

An expert mission from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has concluded its work in Ukraine, which ran from July 29 to August 8, 2025. IAEA experts evaluated the condition of electrical substations crucial for the safe, reliable and uninterrupted operation of Ukrainian nuclear power plants. They also identified needs for additional technical assistance to enhance the energy system's resilience with regards to nuclear safety and security.

IAEA representatives reported significant progress in restoration work at facilities they had previously inspected.

Ukraine and the United States Discussed Strengthening Energy Security and the Protection of Energy Infrastructure

Deepening the strategic partnership between Ukraine and the United States, strengthening the physical protection of energy facilities — particularly substations — and the effective use of international aid for the restoration of damaged infrastructure were the key topics of the meeting between Ukraine’s Minister of Energy, Svitlana Grynchuk, and U.S. Chargé d’Affaires in Ukraine, Julie S. Ukraine Accelerates Implementation of European Commission Recommendations in the Energy Sector

The energy sector is the only one for which the deadlines for implementing the Action Plan on the European Commission’s recommendations have been shortened.

In particular, by the third quarter of 2025, Ukraine is expected to adopt legislation on the transposition of the Electricity Integration Package (originally planned for the first quarter of 2026). In the fourth quarter of 2025, legislation aimed at encouraging investment in renewable energy sources will come into force — initially scheduled for the third quarter of 2026.
