The Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine has received approval from the National Energy and Utilities Regulatory Commission (NEURC) for the implementation of a joint project to increase capacity at the interconnection point with Poland. This decision opens a new stage in expanding natural gas imports from the European Union and will contribute to Ukraine’s further integration into the European energy market.

On 6 July 2026, a joint auction for the increased capacity will be held on the GSA (Gas System Auctions Platform).

The project provides for the auction-based allocation of two levels of increased capacity identified through the market demand assessment process:

  1. Level 1 — 6.98 million cubic metres per day for gas years 2030/2031 to 2044/2045;
  2. Level 2 — 10.20 million cubic metres per day for gas years 2032/2033 to 2046/2047.

Further implementation of the project will depend on the auction results and the successful completion of the economic test. If demand is confirmed, the Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine and the Polish operator GAZ-SYSTEM will proceed to the practical phase of developing the relevant infrastructure.

The project also received simultaneous approval from the Polish regulator URE. This is an important signal of support from European partners and a prerequisite for the implementation of cross-border infrastructure solutions.

Increasing capacity on the Polish route will:

  • expand Ukraine’s access to gas from the European market;
  • reduce dependence on high-risk supply routes;
  • enhance the flexibility and reliability of the energy system during wartime conditions.

The development of the interconnector is also in line with the long-term strategy for integrating the Ukrainian and European gas markets.
