Ukraine has launched the largest energy storage system complex with a capacity of 200 MW, built by DTEK in partnership with the U.S. company Fluence Energy B.V.
The complex includes six facilities located in Kyiv and Dnipropetrovsk regions, constructed in a record time of just one year. The project’s investment amounted to €125 million.
Overall, the system can store 400 MWh of electricity, enough to supply 600,000 households for two hours.
Minister of Energy of Ukraine Svitlana Grynchuk attended the opening ceremony and emphasized the importance of the new complex for the country’s energy resilience.
“Every time the enemy tries to destroy our infrastructure, they only accelerate our move into the future. The launch of this complex is a practical step to strengthen Ukraine’s energy resilience. The new capacity increases system reliability and flexibility, reduces the risks of emergency outages, and allows for effective preparation for the winter period. It also opens new opportunities for the development of renewable energy and the decentralization of the energy system,” stressed the Minister.
The complex provides Ukraine with additional opportunities for balancing the energy system and regulating frequency, which is especially important given the growing share of renewable energy and the constant challenges posed by the war. The new storage systems enable more stable electricity supply for citizens and businesses.
The opening of the complex is also a practical step toward implementing the National Renewable Energy Action Plan through 2030.
Minister Svitlana Grynchuk expressed gratitude to the DTEK group of companies and Fluence for the advanced technologies and support, emphasizing that the project’s goal is not only to restore what has been destroyed but to build a new, modern, resilient, and “green” energy sector in Ukraine.
