The heroism of Chornobyl liquidators is one of the most defining chapters in Ukraine’s modern history. Chornobyl is not only a reminder of the world’s largest technological disaster. It is also a testament to Ukraine’s responsibility in safeguarding nuclear safety across the European continent.
Today, nearly 385 employees in the Exclusion Zone are former liquidators, about 8 percent of the workforce. At the Chornobyl NPP alone, 230 liquidators continue to serve, carrying out their duties through some of the most challenging periods of the new millennium.
We bow our heads in memory of those who gave their lives. Forty-four employees of enterprises under the State Agency of Ukraine for Exclusion Zone Management, both military and civilian, have been killed in Russia’s war against Ukraine.
The sacrifice and resilience of the Chornobyl liquidators embody exceptional courage, responsibility and devotion to Ukraine. Their service is a cornerstone of our national security, yesterday, today and for the future.
