Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) has been in blackout for the second consecutive day, which constitutes a significant violation of normal operational conditions at the facility. This was emphasized by Ukraine’s Minister of Energy, Svitlana Grynchuk, in a post on her Facebook page.
“The largest nuclear power plant in Europe is currently operating on diesel generators. This is already the 10th blackout at ZNPP,” she stressed.
For more than three years, while ZNPP has remained under Russian occupation, Ukraine has continued to ensure electricity supply to the facility through its national energy system. However, due to yet another strike by the occupiers, the only power line supplying ZNPP has been damaged again, the Minister noted.
Svitlana Grynchuk reminded that just last week in Vienna, she held a series of meetings on the margins of the 69th IAEA General Conference, where the situation at ZNPP was a key topic of discussion.
As a result of the conference, a resolution was adopted in which the IAEA demands the immediate de-occupation of the Zaporizhzhia NPP and its return under full control of Ukraine. The document, supported by 62 member states, contains a direct call for the immediate withdrawal of all unauthorized military and other personnel from the facility.
“The international community must finally take decisive action – pressure on Russia must be intensified to ensure the swift demilitarization and de-occupation of the plant. Returning ZNPP under full and legitimate Ukrainian control is the only path to restoring nuclear safety in the region. Delay is unacceptable. The safety of Europe’s largest nuclear power plant is the safety of the entire world,” the Minister concluded.
