Ukraine and Denmark aim to develop cooperation in the field of renewable energy, continue coordinating efforts to enhance the resilience of Ukraine’s energy system, and support the country’s European integration aspirations. These partnership areas became the key topics of meetings with Danish partners held by Ukraine’s Deputy Minister of Energy Roman Andarak during his working visit to Copenhagen.
In particular, during a meeting with the Permanent Secretary of the Danish Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities, Lars Frøling-Petersen, they discussed priority tasks to ensure the stable operation of Ukraine’s energy system amid Russian attacks and in preparation for the upcoming heating season. Emphasis was placed on strengthening the protection of energy facilities, conducting restoration and repair campaigns, and expanding distributed generation capacities.
The Deputy Minister stressed the importance of coordinating efforts and supporting Ukraine in gas supply, especially as Russia continues systematic strikes not only against the electricity infrastructure and generation, but also against oil and gas facilities.
Roman Andarak expressed gratitude to Denmark for successful cooperation within the framework of the Ukraine-Denmark Energy Partnership. In this context, he also highlighted the European integration track of cooperation and the development of the necessary legislative framework for integrating Ukraine into European energy markets.
During the Deputy Minister’s meeting with the Danish Ambassador for Climate Affairs, Ole Thonke, aspects of energy security were discussed. Roman Andarak informed the Ambassador about the scale of Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy sector, their consequences, and the sector’s priority needs.
He thanked Denmark for the support provided to Ukraine since the first days of the full-scale Russian invasion. The Deputy Minister emphasized the particular importance of Denmark’s contributions to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund, which over three years of operation has become an effective mechanism for supporting the energy sector. Denmark was the Fund’s first donor in spring 2022, and to date, Danish partners’ total contribution to the Fund amounts to €51.8 million.
The parties noted the importance of developing bilateral cooperation in the field of renewable energy. Leveraging Danish expertise for implementing “green” energy projects in Ukraine is crucial for building distributed generation capacities, advancing the energy transition, and strengthening energy independence. Particular emphasis was placed on prospects for cooperation in wind energy.
This direction of partnership was further discussed during Roman Andarak’s meeting with the leadership of the Danish Export Investment Fund (EIFO). Participants explored business cooperation prospects, especially in wind energy. Danish companies expressed interest in deepening partnership in this area, primarily in the medium- and long-term. The meeting also covered prospects for attracting investment in the development of the biogas sector, particularly in the context of integrating Ukraine into EU markets.
