Russia’s Presence on Energy Markets Is a Systemic Risk for Global Security – Svitlana Grynchuk

Ukraine calls on the international community to reduce the influence of the Russian Federation on global energy markets and to support diversification of resources, particularly in the nuclear energy sector. Minister of Energy of Ukraine Svitlana Grynchuk emphasized this at the “Roadmaps to New Nuclear Energy 2025” Conference in Paris.

The Minister underlined that investing in advanced nuclear technologies enables Ukraine to become a reliable regional energy hub and help Europe finally get rid of dependence on Russian resources. “We have already eliminated dependence on the russian federation in nuclear fuel supply and view nuclear energy as the foundation for post-war recovery and climate neutrality,” Svitlana Grynchuk noted.

During a thematic panel, the Minister shared Ukraine’s experience in securing nuclear fuel: Ukrainian uranium is mined in Ukraine, processed in Canada, enriched in Europe, and manufactured into fuel assemblies by an American company, after which it returns to power Ukrainian reactors. Work is also underway to develop domestic uranium extraction resources and to prepare for the launch of national fuel assembly production.

Svitlana Grynchuk outlined prospects for the development of nuclear energy in Ukraine, including the expansion of large reactor capacities and the introduction of small modular reactors. “Nuclear energy is key to post-war recovery. In the process of rebuilding, we strive to establish new global standards in energy and innovation,” the Minister stressed.

The Minister of Energy expressed gratitude to international partners for their support and understanding, particularly to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency, and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy of the Republic of Korea for organizing the conference and providing a platform for constructive dialogue.
