The Okhmatdyt National Children's Specialized Hospital has launched its own electricity generation as part of the first phase of measures aimed at strengthening the facility’s energy independence.
Recently, two hybrid photovoltaic power systems were installed at the hospital’s modern medical and diagnostic building in Kyiv. The systems have a total photovoltaic capacity of 75.565 kW, inverter capacity of 100 kW, and are equipped with battery storage with a total capacity of 92.16 kWh.
The installation was carried out under the Ray of Hope joint initiative of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine.
The new equipment enables the hospital to generate electricity from solar energy and store it in battery systems, creating an additional backup power source in the event of electricity supply disruptions or when on-site generation alone is insufficient.
Strengthening energy autonomy is of particular importance for Okhmatdyt, as it is Ukraine's largest children's hospital. Around 650 patients receive medical care there every day, while the hospital's outpatient clinic recorded more than 216,000 visits last year.
The hospital provides highly specialized medical care to children of all ages—from newborns to adolescents—from across Ukraine and abroad. Many of its patients require treatment for the most complex and rare medical conditions. Last year alone, Okhmatdyt's specialists performed 11,500 surgical procedures, one-third of which were highly complex, rare, or unique operations.
Reliable electricity supply is therefore essential to ensure the uninterrupted operation of operating theatres, intensive care units, diagnostic equipment, and other critical hospital services on which patients' health and lives depend every day.
Ukraine continues systematic efforts to expand alternative energy sources for healthcare facilities. Under the Ray of Hope project, solar power systems are scheduled to be installed at 60 healthcare facilities by the end of the year, while an additional 200 facilities will receive similar support under the HEAL Ukraine project.
