Norway has announced an additional contribution of NOK 100 million (approximately USD 10 million) to support the restoration of the New Safe Confinement at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, which was damaged as a result of a Russian drone attack.
The funds will be channelled through the International Chornobyl Cooperation Account (ICCA), administered by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). The financing will support the restoration of safety systems at the Chornobyl NPP following the Russian drone attack in February 2025, which damaged the New Safe Confinement over the destroyed fourth reactor unit.
“Norway remains one of Ukraine’s most reliable partners in strengthening the resilience of our energy sector and addressing the consequences of Russian attacks. We have built a strong partnership within the framework of the Ukraine Energy Support Fund, while Norwegian assistance and equipment supplies continue to help our energy professionals restore infrastructure damaged by Russian strikes,” said Denys Shmyhal.
It should be recalled that at the end of April this year, the United States announced USD 100 million in funding for repairs to the Chornobyl confinement structure. In addition, during the International Chornobyl Recovery and Nuclear Safety Conference, an agreement was signed with the EBRD for EUR 30 million to support the first stage of restoration works, while international partners made initial commitments totalling nearly EUR 100 million.
“We are grateful to all international partners for their steadfast support and solidarity with Ukraine. These contributions represent an important step towards strengthening nuclear and radiation safety not only in Ukraine, but throughout Europe,” Denys Shmyhal emphasized.
