First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine - Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal has instructed the relevant authorities and energy sector enterprises to ensure the stable operation of the power system during peak demand periods and to minimize electricity shortages.
"Due to the extreme heatwave affecting Europe, Ukraine’s power system is experiencing increased pressure," the Minister of Energy stated.
To help balance the system, Denys Shmyhal issued the following instructions:
- Review the maintenance schedule for nuclear power generating units with a view to optimizing outage planning and increasing electricity generation during periods of peak demand.
- Ensure the completion of emergency restoration works and the return to operation of thermal generation equipment with a total capacity of at least 300 MW as quickly as possible.
- Expand the use of additional generation capacity from cogeneration units, particularly gas-fired generation, and prepare proposals for further liberalizing the regulatory framework to enhance their efficient operation.
- Maximize the utilization of energy storage systems to help cover peak demand and increase the available system capacity by approximately 300 MW.
- Take additional measures to increase electricity imports from European Union partner countries and explore options for expanding imports through state-owned enterprises.
"Today, Ukraine’s energy professionals are doing everything possible to ensure the stability of the power system. However, how critical the situation becomes also depends on each of us. Responsible electricity consumption during peak hours (17:00–22:00) is an important contribution every consumer can make to maintaining a reliable electricity supply," Denys Shmyhal emphasized.
