The Kryvyi Rih Oncology Centre has commissioned a solar power plant and an autonomous power supply system for one of its medical buildings under the “Ray of Hope” initiative, a joint project of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine aimed at strengthening the energy resilience of healthcare facilities through the deployment of on-site electricity generation.
The oncology centre specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and provides surgical care, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, intensive care and rehabilitation services. The hospital includes gynecological, mammology, thoracic, abdominal and chemotherapy departments, as well as a radiotherapy unit.
Kryvyi Rih has become a refuge for many internally displaced people. As a result, the facility now serves not only residents of the city and surrounding district, but also patients from the Mykolaiv, Kherson, Donetsk and Kharkiv regions, significantly increasing demand for its services.
More than 250 patients receive medical care at the facility every day. According to the hospital, more than 12,000 patients were treated and nearly 3,000 surgical procedures were performed in 2025.
“Kryvyi Rih is regularly subjected to enemy attacks, which often cause power outages. For an oncology hospital, uninterrupted electricity is critical, as operating theatres, diagnostic equipment and intensive care units must function continuously. The installed equipment will strengthen the hospital’s energy resilience and enable it to continue providing medical care even during emergency power outages,” said Viacheslav Solonskyi, Director of the Kryvyi Rih Oncology Centre.
The newly installed solar power plant and autonomous power supply system provide an additional source of electricity for the medical building housing 11 departments and units, helping maintain the operation of medical equipment, operating theatres and other critical facilities during power disruptions.
The solar power plant has an installed capacity of 246 kW and is expected to generate approximately 7.32 MWh of electricity per month. According to preliminary estimates, this will allow the hospital to cover part of its electricity demand with solar generation and save more than UAH 60,000 per month. Actual output will depend on seasonal and weather conditions. During emergency outages, the system will also support the uninterrupted operation of key hospital departments and the continuation of patient treatment.
The “Ray of Hope” programme is a joint initiative of the European Commission, the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine and the Ministry of Health of Ukraine. It is being implemented through the Ukraine Energy Support Fund and coordinated by the Energy Community Secretariat.
The programme aims to strengthen the energy resilience of healthcare facilities by equipping them with solar panels, battery energy storage systems and other equipment necessary to ensure reliable electricity supply and uninterrupted operation even under challenging conditions.
Since the beginning of the year, 32 additional hospitals have launched their own electricity generation under the project.
