As part of a working visit to Vienna, where the IAEA Board of Governors meeting is taking place, Ukraine's Minister of Energy, German Galushchenko, held a meeting with Laura Holgate, the U.S. Permanent Representative to the IAEA.
The parties discussed threats to nuclear and radiation safety stemming from russian attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, particularly substations critical for the operation of nuclear power plants. They focused on areas of cooperation to enhance the protection of these vital facilities.
Laura Holgate emphasized that the United States supports the continuation of IAEA missions at Ukrainian substations, particularly to document the consequences of recent russian attacks and the damage inflicted on infrastructure critical for nuclear generation.
German Galushchenko, in turn, stressed the need for increased international pressure on russia to cease attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure. The parties discussed ways to coordinate these efforts within the framework of the IAEA.
The discussion also addressed threats to nuclear and radiation safety posed by the russian occupation of Europe's largest nuclear power plant, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP). The Ukrainian side highlighted the urgent need to restore monitoring of ZNPP parameters by Ukraine's regulatory authority, which has been obstructed since May 2023 due to russian interference.
