First batches of biomethane are evidence of Ukraine's integration into the European biomethane market and joint implementation of the EU's task of achieving the RePowrEu 2030 level of 35 billion

Ukraine’s Deputy Minister of Energy, Mykola Kolisnyk, met with the EU Delegation to Ukraine representatives  to discuss the specifics of biomethane export operations to EU countries, making Ukraine the first non-EU state to complete such transactions successfully. As of today, two Ukrainian producers have already exported biomethane to the EU. The parties also explored prospects for further expanding Ukraine’s access to the EU biomethane market.

"Together with the EU, we have successfully carried out the first pilot transactions for biomethane exports, paving the way for further investments in renewable energy development in Ukraine. Structuring the market, accessible financing, and equipment leasing—all these factors open new prospects for strengthening partnerships, expanding biomethane production in Ukraine, and enhancing energy security in both Ukraine and Europe," stated Mykola Kolisnyk, Deputy Minister of Energy of Ukraine.

During the meeting, key technical aspects of biomethane export operations were discussed, including accounting, documentation, customs clearance, adaptation of Ukrainian legislation to EU directives, and the registration of Ukrainian producers and the Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine in the EU's Union Database (UDB).

"Over the past year, we have been closely cooperating with the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine to recognize Ukrainian biomethane as 'green officially.' This will allow Ukrainian producers to receive the corresponding premium and serve as a strong incentive for industry growth. Today, we analyzed the first biomethane export transactions, thoroughly reviewing all processes: how the export is conducted, how mass balancing works, whether double accounting of greenhouse gas emissions is avoided, and whether international certification requirements are met. Ensuring these standards is crucial for establishing a stable market operation in compliance with EU legislation," stated Anne Bercio, Trade Counsellor at the Trade and Economic Section of the EU Delegation to Ukraine.

EU representatives also announced that the approval of a Roadmap for the Strategic Partnership between Ukraine and the EU in the fields of biomethane, hydrogen, and other synthetic gases will take place soon.
