Denys Shmyhal: Today Was the Most Difficult Day for Ukraine’s Energy System Since the November 2022 Blackout

22 January 2026, 21:48

A meeting of the Headquarters for the Elimination of the Consequences of Emergencies in Kyiv and the Kyiv region was held under the chairmanship of First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine and Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal. During the meeting, participants discussed the current situation in the energy system.

“Today, Ukraine experienced the most difficult day for its energy system since the blackout in November 2022. As a result of constant shelling, generation equipment, distribution networks, and transformers have been damaged. The situation is extremely severe. Energy workers are forced to continue applying emergency power outages in order to preserve the integrity of the energy system,” Denys Shmyhal emphasized.

Special attention during the meeting was paid to the issue of heat supply in the capital. Throughout the day, 165 repair crews worked to restore heat to homes in Kyiv, with an additional 83 crews starting night shifts. The work is being carried out under heightened security risks due to ongoing air raid alerts.

Denys Shmyhal stressed the inadmissibility of any manifestations of physical aggression toward emergency repair and restoration crews, who are working around the clock under difficult weather and security conditions.

“I would like to remind everyone that the enemy is not only shelling our infrastructure but is also attempting to destabilize our society. We are seeing a large number of fakes and manipulations in the information space. I urge people to trust only official information,” the First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine and Minister of Energy added.
