During a working visit to Chernihiv Region, First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine – Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal visited several energy facilities in the region that are regularly targeted by Russian attacks.

“The main focus is on key electrical substations that ensure electricity distribution and transmission. The enemy systematically attacks them. Repair crews work around the clock and restore damaged equipment as soon as the security situation allows. We thank energy workers for their hard work!” Denys Shmyhal emphasised.

The Minister of Energy stressed that efforts to strengthen the protection of energy facilities are ongoing. This year, work began on implementing second-level protection at 14 substations in the region, funded by the state budget. The work is continuing. Together with the regional military administration leadership, Denys Shmyhal also visited a cogeneration facility and other energy facilities critical to the region and the city of Chernihiv. He received briefings on measures being taken to prepare these facilities for the heating season amid the challenging security situation. Priorities include expanding distributed generation, building up equipment reserves, and constructing shelters and protective structures.

“We are mobilising as much international support as possible. This year, energy companies in Chernihiv Region have received 338.5 tonnes of equipment through the Ministry of Energy’s humanitarian aid hubs. Procurement worth EUR 160.7 million has been approved for the region through the Ukraine Energy Support Fund. This includes power transformers, high-voltage equipment, and equipment for electrical substations and their protection. Under the UNDP project, four cogeneration units with a total capacity of 10 MW have been procured for the region,” Denys Shmyhal reported.

The Minister of Energy also took part in the handover of a new batch of generators for the region, provided under a government programme of the Republic of Latvia. This year alone, Latvia has supplied Chernihiv Region with 48 generators with capacities ranging from 80 to 650 kW, and another 12 generators are expected.
