Denys Shmyhal Reports on Response to Russian Strike: Restoration Efforts Continue Around the Clock

20 January 2026, 21:50

Under the chairmanship of First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine and Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal, a regular meeting of the Headquarters for the Elimination of the Consequences of Emergencies in Kyiv and the region was held. Participants reviewed reports on the situation in the capital following another large-scale enemy attack.

“Water supply in Kyiv has been restored. The system is reaching the required operating parameters, although some areas still experience reduced pressure. Water infrastructure facilities were de-energized as a result of shelling,” Denys Shmyhal stated.

According to him, the situation following the Russian strikes remains challenging, but response and recovery efforts are continuing without interruption. At the same time, the operation of critical infrastructure facilities is being reviewed.

“We are analyzing how much additional electricity can be freed up and redirected to household consumers,” the First Deputy Prime Minister emphasized.

Denys Shmyhal instructed that further analysis be conducted and that all possible facilities be switched to generator power in order to free up electricity for the population. “Kyiv has already received 49 of the 55 generators planned, allocated from the reserve hub of the Ministry of Energy. We expect the remaining units to arrive shortly,” he added.

He also noted that following the nighttime attack, around 4,000 residential buildings in the capital remain without heat, and restoration work is ongoing.

“We have a clear plan that has been reviewed in detail. Start-up operations will continue throughout the night. We plan to begin heating the boilers late tonight so that heat supply to Kyiv residents’ homes can start in the morning. According to the Ministry for Communities and Territorial Development, repair capacity in the capital has been significantly reinforced: 68 teams are currently working, including 43 from Ukrzaliznytsia and 25 from other regions,” Denys Shmyhal emphasized.
