During a working visit to a nuclear power plant, Denys Shmyhal, First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine – Minister of Energy, chaired a meeting on the future development of nuclear energy.
“Nuclear generation will become the backbone of the new energy architecture, as it ensures coverage of the base load of the power grid. Accordingly, Ukraine requires new nuclear power units, including the completion of Units 3 and 4 at the Khmelnytskyi NPP,” he stated.
Denys Shmyhal noted that two options for completing these power units are currently under consideration, with experts working to determine the most optimal solution.
According to the Minister, there are also plans to integrate the state enterprise “SkhidGZK” into Energoatom, which would enable the creation of an integrated holding covering the full nuclear fuel cycle. The relevant draft law has already been submitted to Parliament.
The plant’s management reported ongoing efforts to increase capacity and enhance safety and protection measures. “We confirmed this during the site visit, where construction of protective structures is actively underway,” he added.
Another priority area is the modernization of capacities and the construction of additional backup transmission lines, which will further strengthen the country’s overall energy security.
“I thank the plant’s personnel for their important contribution to maintaining the stability of the power system. I am grateful to every energy worker for their dedication and professionalism,” he emphasized.
