The Ministry of Energy of Ukraine and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) are expanding their partnership in the development of nuclear energy and the restoration of critical energy infrastructure. The corresponding Memorandum of Cooperation was signed by the First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine – Minister of Energy, Denys Shmyhal, and the Director General of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi.
The document предусматривает cooperation across a number of key areas, in particular:
- support for the institutional restructuring of Energoatom;
- facilitation of the construction of new power units, including at Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant;
- preparation for the deployment of small modular reactors (SMRs);
- restoration of electricity grid infrastructure critical for nuclear safety;
- modernization of nuclear power plants and facilities within the Chornobyl zone.
During the meeting, Rafael Grossi also handed over to the Ukrainian side a unique methodology for the operation of nuclear power plants under wartime conditions. This distinctive IAEA document will serve as a reference for global best practices and contribute to preventing potential nuclear incidents.
“Systematic cooperation with the IAEA enables not only the restoration of damaged infrastructure, but also the establishment of a foundation for the modernization and development of Ukraine’s nuclear energy sector in line with the best international practices,” Denys Shmyhal emphasized.
The Minister also expressed his gratitude to the IAEA for the provision of two ambulances for the needs of the South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant and the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, which will strengthen emergency response capacities.
“I would like to thank Rafael Grossi for his visit on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Chornobyl disaster and for all the support provided,” Denys Shmyhal added.
