First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine – Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal held a meeting with Romania’s Minister of Energy Bogdan-Gruia Ivan to discuss key energy cooperation and cross-border infrastructure initiatives between Ukraine and Romania.
The parties focused on implementing agreements between the Presidents of Ukraine and Romania regarding the construction of two new electricity interconnectors. The technical aspects of the projects were reviewed in detail.
“The construction of two new lines will increase the capacity of the Ukrainian power system and enable higher electricity imports. We are working to strengthen the resilience of our energy system amid wartime challenges,” Denys Shmyhal stated.
The discussion also covered the development of the Vertical Gas Corridor. Denys Shmyhal emphasized the project’s significant potential, particularly through expanding capacity with the involvement of Ukraine’s underground gas storage facilities - the largest in Europe.
“Such cooperation will substantially contribute to meeting Europe’s gas needs and could more than double transport capacities,” he noted.
Denys Shmyhal thanked Romania for its continued support and critical assistance during the winter period, including humanitarian aid, generators, and emergency electricity supplies.
