First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine – Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal met with U.S. Senators Richard Blumenthal and Sheldon Whitehouse. They discussed implementing large-scale sanctions against Russia, including in the nuclear energy sector. Shmyhal noted that this is crucial to reduce the aggressor’s profits used to fund the war. He also thanked the senators for supporting sanctions against Russia’s shadow fleet.

During the meeting, Shmyhal and the U.S. senators outlined strategic areas of Ukraine–U.S. cooperation. The Minister highlighted the importance of American LNG supplies to strengthen Ukraine’s energy resilience.

“We have the opportunity to jointly expand the capacity of the Vertical Gas Corridor to 10 billion cubic meters per year. Ukrainian gas storage facilities can provide flexible storage for American gas and its further transport to Europe. This is a step toward strengthening energy security in the region,” emphasized the First Deputy Prime Minister.

He also discussed joint nuclear energy projects with the U.S. senators and the potential involvement of American financial guarantees.

Shmyhal noted that support is also important for restoring damaged energy capacities, including procuring American-made equipment: “This will allow the country to prepare in time and confidently enter the next winter season,” he stressed.

The First Deputy Prime Minister thanked the United States for its support and readiness to continue working together to strengthen Ukraine’s energy security.
