First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine – Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal held a meeting with Alain Berset, Secretary General of the Council of Europe.
Denys Shmyhal emphasized the importance of holding Russia accountable for its war crimes, including daily attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, particularly during winter, when subzero temperatures put civilians at risk of losing electricity and heating. He called on partners to properly assess these actions.
Shmyhal and Berset also discussed compensation for damages. The Minister of Energy thanked the Secretary General for clear support of Ukraine and for establishing the Damage Registry as part of the International Compensation Mechanism.
“Ukraine continues to suffer enormous losses in the energy sector due to Russian attacks. Restoring energy infrastructure is critical for resuming normal life in the country. The aggressor must compensate for everything it has destroyed,” Shmyhal emphasized.
He also stressed the importance of strengthening sanctions against Russia in the energy sector, including targeting oil, gas, and nuclear industries. According to the First Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Energy, this will deprive the Kremlin of funds to continue the war.
