First Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Energy of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal held an online meeting with IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi to discuss the security situation surrounding Ukraine's nuclear power plants.

"We highly appreciate the IAEA's missions and remain committed to facilitating the work of the Agency's experts at Ukraine's energy facilities. We agreed to continue maintaining close coordination," Denys Shmyhal emphasized.

The parties also discussed the current progress in restoring the New Safe Confinement at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant.

"Our partners have already secured EUR 30 million to finance the preparatory phase of the restoration works. We have also reached agreements with our partners to mobilise USD 500 million for the restoration of the New Safe Confinement. Contributions from Norway, the United States, the European Union, and other partners covering more than half of this amount have already been announced. Together with the EBRD, we continue to consolidate international support to begin full-scale restoration of the facility as soon as possible," the Minister said.

Special attention was also paid to the need to adapt international approaches to nuclear safety under wartime conditions. As Denys Shmyhal noted, the international community needs a new doctrine that reflects modern military threats and provides effective mechanisms for protecting nuclear facilities located in areas affected by armed conflict.

Denys Shmyhal expressed his gratitude to Rafael Grossi and the IAEA team for their principled position, personal engagement, and consistent support for Ukraine.

"We highly value the Agency's role in ensuring nuclear and radiation safety and in strengthening the global nuclear safety framework. We look forward to continuing this constructive cooperation," First Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Energy of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal said.
