First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine – Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal held a meeting with Tom Fletcher, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator. They discussed the needs of Ukraine’s energy sector and population, which continue to face targeted Russian attacks.

According to Denys Shmyhal, with the support of UN agencies, including the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), as well as other partners, more than 450 MW of distributed generation capacity has already been installed in Ukraine. This includes gas turbines, gas reciprocating engines and cogeneration units that provide backup power to critical infrastructure in regions experiencing the most intense Russian attacks.

The Minister of Energy noted that work is currently underway to accelerate the further installation, grid connection and commissioning of equipment that has already been procured. He also emphasized the need to strengthen the energy resilience not only of energy facilities but also of social infrastructure.

“We look forward to continued cooperation and support from our partners in supplying additional equipment, including equipment to enhance energy independence,” Denys Shmyhal emphasized.

The parties also discussed support for frontline regions and civilians who are suffering most from the consequences of Russia’s aggression.

“I am grateful to Tom Fletcher for his visit to Ukraine’s southern regions and for the continued support provided by UN agencies to Ukrainians affected by the humanitarian crisis caused by the war. We look forward to continuing our cooperation and further coordinating our joint efforts,” the First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine – Minister of Energy added.
