On the sidelines of the Energy Forum in Baku, First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine and Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal met with Moldova’s Minister of Energy Dorin Junghietu. The parties discussed cooperation in the gas and electricity sectors, as well as issues related to strengthening regional energy security.

As the Minister of Energy noted, Moldova is an important partner for Ukraine in the development of the Southern Gas Supply Corridor. Particular attention was given to cooperation within the Vertical Gas Corridor initiative and to increasing the route’s technical capacity.

Denys Shmyhal thanked Moldova for its decision to reduce gas transportation tariffs along the route by 90%.

“This opens up additional opportunities for expanding cooperation, particularly for gas supplies via the Trans-Balkan route to Central European countries, not only to Ukraine,” the Minister stated.

Other key areas of cooperation discussed included:

  • improving emergency mutual assistance mechanisms;
  • coordinating power system balancing;
  • joint maintenance, restoration, and expansion of interconnectors, as well as the implementation of related infrastructure projects.

In particular, Denys Shmyhal noted that agreements on the development of the Bălți–Dnistrovska PSP interconnector are expected to be signed in the near future, further expanding transit opportunities.

Denys Shmyhal expressed gratitude to Moldova for its consistent and practical cooperation in the energy sector, which is already contributing to greater energy stability across the region.
