Strengthening Energy Security: The European Commission Will Help Create Gas Reserves for Reliable Supply to Ukraine and the Region

The European Commission will assist Ukraine in financing gas purchases, including through the Ukraine Facility in cooperation with implementing partners. This will increase gas reserves to ensure supply security, benefiting both Ukraine and the entire region.

This is one of the key points of the new support package for Ukraine, aimed at strengthening the country's energy system and ensuring its full integration into the European energy market. The package was presented by the European Commission leadership on February 24 in Kyiv.

“We are grateful to the leadership of the European Union and all participating countries for their systematic and consistent support of Ukraine’s energy sector. Your contribution to the restoration and resilience of our energy system is crucial. Ukraine remains committed to reforms and seeks the fastest possible full integration into the EU's common energy market. The use of Ukrainian storage facilities and the creation of sufficient natural gas reserves are strategically important for the reliability of gas supply in the region. Together, we are strengthening the energy security of all of Europe, of which Ukraine is and always will be an integral part,” emphasized the Minister of Energy of Ukraine German Galushchenko.

In addition to financing gas purchases, the package includes the integration of Ukraine’s electricity market into the EU no later than the spring of 2027, as well as accelerating investments in renewable energy.

"Only a fully independent energy system can protect Ukraine from current attacks and future pressure. Ukraine's full integration into the EU energy market will be part of the broader security guarantees that the EU can provide, as well as an effective prerequisite for recovery, since energy security is key to ensuring the flow of investments across the country," the statement reads.
