Ukraine welcomes the successful synchronization of the power systems of Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia with the Synchronous Area of Continental Europe (CESA), which is of exceptional significance not only for strengthening the resilience of the Baltic countries' energy systems, as they have now become part of the European energy space, but also for enhancing the energy security of the entire region.
This was emphasized by the Minister of Energy of Ukraine, German Galushchenko.
"We congratulate our partners from the Baltic countries who have taken a very important step in strengthening their energy resilience and security by disconnecting from the unified energy system with russia and Belarus and joining the synchronous area of Continental Europe. This is another stage in reducing russia's influence on European countries in the energy sector," the minister noted.
For more than 24 hours, the Baltic power systems operated in isolated mode to conduct system tests, the results of which confirmed the feasibility of synchronization. This integration enables the Baltic countries to manage their power grids in close cooperation with all other countries in Continental Europe, significantly enhancing regional energy security.
It should be recalled that Ukraine disconnected from the russian and Belarusian power system on February 24, 2022, just hours before the start of russia’s full-scale invasion. After operating in isolated mode for 21 days amid enemy occupation of energy facilities and continuous attacks, Ukraine's power system demonstrated its resilience and, on March 16, 2022, was urgently synchronized with the European ENTSO-E network.
