Deputy Minister of Energy of Ukraine Roman Andarak held a meeting with Hans Das, eputy Director-General and Chief Operations Officer of the Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO) of the European Commission.
The key topic of the meeting was cooperation to provide effective assistance to Ukraine’s energy sector amid targeted russian attacks.
The Deputy Minister informed the European Commission representative about the challenging situation in the energy system following recent russian attacks. He emphasized that this time the targets were electricity transmission facilities, substations critical for the operation of nuclear power plants and the import of electricity from European countries, as well as thermal and hydro generation facilities.
"Unfortunately, two energy workers lost their lives. We have already started restoration work at facilities where it is possible, while also assessing the impact of the attack and analyzing urgent needs. We are working to restore electricity supply to consumers left without power due to the inflicted damage," the Deputy Minister added.
Hans Das expressed condolences for the losses caused by the russian attack and assured that the European Union would continue to support Ukraine and its citizens. According to him, 45% of the EU and its member states' humanitarian aid is directed specifically to the needs of Ukraine’s energy sector.
The parties discussed the effectiveness of cooperation tools, particularly to meet regional energy equipment needs.
Roman Andarak stressed that equipment for repairs and the expansion of distributed generation capacity are still among the major needs. Specifically, the focus was on high-voltage equipment, gas turbines, gas piston units, and generators for critical infrastructure.
Technical and expert support issues were also discussed. The parties agreed to hold regular technical consultations to expedite the provision of assistance.
