russia seeks to plunge Ukraine into darkness and cold, destroy our energy system, and create a total blackout. To achieve this, it repeatedly attacks electricity generation and transmission facilities.
During the full-scale invasion, the enemy has launched over 1,000 missiles at Ukraine’s energy system. russian forces have occupied over 18 GW of capacity, including Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.
In 2024, the enemy destroyed or damaged over 9 GW of capacity — equivalent to the peak consumption of countries like the Netherlands or Finland. Despite this, Ukraine’s energy system continues to operate, and our energy workers tirelessly bring back power to homes every day.
For 1,000 days, Ukraine’s energy system has demonstrated independence from russia and remarkable resilience.
On the night of February 24, 2022, Ukraine disconnected from the russian and Belarusian energy grids. By March 16, 2022, it had joined the European ENTSO-E grid, significantly enhancing its energy security.
The entire civilized world has united in efforts to support the Ukrainian people and our energy sector. In April 2022, at the initiative of Ukraine’s Energy Minister, German Galushchenko, and EU Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson, a unique mechanism was created to consolidate aid from partners willing to support Ukrainian energy workers in maintaining stable energy supply during russia’s military aggression.
Over €700 million has been accumulated in the Energy Support Fund to restore energy facilities. During this time, Ukraine has received over 19,000 tons of humanitarian aid from 36 countries to stabilize its energy system.
The efforts of energy workers are more than just repairs — they are a fight for the normal lives of millions, often at the cost of their own lives. Each loss among energy workers is a painful reminder of their courage and self-sacrifice.
For 1,000 days, thanks to their unwavering work and despite immense challenges, Ukrainians keep the light on. Thanks to the defenders, rescuers, energy workers, and every Ukrainian who saves energy, installs alternative power sources, and helps resist russia’s energy terror.
Together we are strong. Light will always prevail over darkness.
